STOP LOOKING for your USP & Try This…

By Jennifer Hall | Business Mindset , Client Attraction

where's Your unique selling point (USP)...

If you've been racking your brains trying to find your USP (unique selling point) to no avail, it's time to stop looking.

Not because I want you to give up, but because it's actually extremely rare in such a saturated market to find a pre-existing USP.

'You don't find one - you CREATE one'

But being unique doesn't mean you are useful. So when you are thinking about creating a USP you have to be mindful that there has to be a benefit to it as well.

be the best of the USP's...

Your 'way' of helping people has to be BETTER in some way. That's not to say that the other ways out there aren't awesome too, but you have to be better in some way for a certain someone to feel compelled to choose you. In order to be unique, you have to be brave enough to point out WHY you are different.

In the Monetise Your Message programme that I'm running at the moment, I'm currently helping my clients to create their USP's as part of their overall 'Desirability Factor'. Whilst i'm obviously not going to giving away the full paid content, I thought I'd share 3 top tips that might help when thinking about what makes you different.

3 top tips to discover What makes you different...

Top tip #1...

Get really specific on your ideal client. Once you know what kind of person they are, their habits, their faults, their likes/dislikes, the challenges that are specific to them beyond the immediate problem you solve, you can start to see how you can create a USP.

Example - one of my awesome clients Anwin Mbah, talented Wealth Strategist, creates a Spending Plan for her clients instead of a Saving Plan. This is because she knows that her particular type of client will reject/hate the idea of a savings plan because they have a spending habit. So by changing the angle in which she tackles their problem specifically, her way will work 'better' because it's designed with their mindset in mind.

Top Tip #2...

Think about why your ideal client will struggle or has struggled in the past with other 'ways' of trying to achieve what they wanted. What could you bring to the table that would alleviate that struggle and make the process better in some way?

Top Tip #3...

Of course if you have read my book Expert Unrivalled, you will know that what makes you unique and stand-out is the unique cocktail of your micro-niche/specialism, personality/style, values & opinions, your story etc. The entire mix is what makes you entirely unique and people will be drawn to the energy in which that mix creates.

But a very strong pull to choosing you over others is the logic behind your method. So don't just stop at 'I'm great so people will obviously choose me'. They might follow you, but in order for people to want to buy from you, you need a 'NEW SOLUTION'.

If you'd like to find out more about becoming a unique 'must have' then...

Passion does not always equal profit

Passion Does Not Always Equal Profit In Business

By Jennifer Hall | Business Mindset , Pricing

passion vs Profit...CONTROVERSIAL...

One of the most controversial things I have ever said is that your ‘passion’ doesn’t always equal profit. At least not directly. And this was echoed by the wonderful Carrie Wilkerson at Youpreneur 2018 and prompted me to share this nugget again.

What Is Passion...

When I talk about passion in this context, I’m talking about the hobbies you have. The granular activities that you love to do. The social responsibility endeavour that lights you up and fills your soul. As wonderful as these things are, sometimes a hobby needs to stay a hobby. And sometimes social responsibility needs to stay a humanitarian project. When you’re running a business you have to be serious about making money just as much as much as you are about making impact and having fun.

Exceptions Do Exist...

I’m not saying that you can’t turn passion into profit full stop. There are plenty of people who have turned their passion into a business. Just look at Andy my Evertrekking other half who created a business helping other people fulfil their adventure travel dreams. But it’s not always possible and it’s certainly not always possible to fit ‘every’ passion into your business model.

In fact, I'm going to go as far as to say a lot of people love their craft, but they don't like running a business. But what you really need to get passionate about to run a profitable business - is making money. You have to get passionate about making money and becoming a great marketer. Because if you don't, you really are just running a hobby or a passion project.

This doesn't mean you have to become a cut throat business person. Of course, if we're all honest, the core reason we started a business usually isn't about the money (myself included). But it soon starts to become about the money when you realise the time, effort and energy that goes into serving others. And when people don't want to pay for that service we can become pretty resentful over time. We're all here to make impact, serve others and perhaps even leave a legacy... but we can do that without running a business. We can volunteer our time for free to make that difference.

Let's get honest here, after reading that last line, does that make you want to leave your business, go rogue and get a job? Hell NO! Because deep down you know you were here to run a profitable BUSINESS! There is NO shame in that. We can still give up our time, and in fact, the more profitable our businesses become, the more time you can release to go and do that charity work, spend time on your hobbies etc.

But you gotta feed you and your family first!

What you can do is intertwine some elements of your life into your brand and bring your big why and charity endeavours into your visibility and message.

We all know James Wedmore loves the sea and surfs because he uses his message around having a business so you can lead the life you want. He's featured surfing in his videos and his message about business by design really works well with this.

Andy helps corporates raise money for charity by be the fundraising platform and gives back to Nepal to help them rebuild their country and drive their economy. But he's still making plenty of money. He's also an avid scuba diver, film buff, socialite, gamer, surfer, family man etc etc - some of this stuff get's drip fed into his content when it's relevant to do so and he can link back or fancies letting his audience know more about him. But he's not losing sleep over the fact his business doesn't encompass all his multi-passions.

We are ALL multi-Passionate

But your business should first and foremost be about helping an individual solve a problem and achieve an outcome that they want, AND charging for it. That has to come first. Otherwise you don’t have a viable business and you can’t earn the monies.

People don't pay you to do the things that you love to do. They pay you to help them...

If your passion can help someone achieve a goal and solve their problems – go for it… otherwise it’s time to reassess your business.

How many emails is too many emails

Emails – Can you email your list too much?

By Jennifer Hall | Business Mindset , Productivity

4 Emails to your list in ONE day? Really? Don’t you think that’s a bit much?

No, I don't...

Too many people and even some marketing leaders make us feel ashamed of emailing our list. They complain and make out that emailing your list ‘too much’ will result in people hating you.

The Fact Is, I Don’t Believe You Can Email Too Much...

I'm human too and I worry about what people think of me and I worry about pissing people off. Although, I email my list around 3 times a week, sometimes more, and I know people who send emails daily & their audience LOVES them! Likewise, I have been known to send 4 emails in one day… (if you email around twice a month I’m imagining you running for the sick bag right now).

Consequently, In my last launch, I hesitated to send the last reminder that the early bird was about to close. ‘Surely they’ve had enough reminders right? They’ve had 3 emails already??’ So I wrote the email, and hovered over the send button. Then I shut the lid on my laptop, made a tea, gave myself a slap, and sent the email. And bam a sale!

PEOPLE WANT & NEED REMINDING!

So, If you find the emails annoying, unsubscribe.

Furthermore, If you are scared of unsubscribes – why are you holding on to non-buyers?

FACT. I don’t JUST send promo emails, I like to share incredible value to make an impact on my readers. But, I’m also running a business & the people that like my stuff - want to buy my stuff – simple as.

Want To Make Sure You’re Delivering Impact Without Being Annoying?

Run it through this filter, as long as you’re hitting two or more of these as a yes then you’re good to send…

Is this email...

  • f-ing amazing?
  • relevant to my ideal client?
  • necessary?

If they’ve asked to be on your list and your emails are helping them (that includes selling them the product that will change their life) – email them.

They want your help, they want more you! Emailing isn’t sleazy UNLESS you spam.

What Makes A Successful Business

By Jennifer Hall | Business Mindset , Positioning

My businesses weren't born out of necessity...

  • I didn't start one because I wanted my kids to be proud.
  • I didn't start one because there was no other option (in fact I chucked in various high paid corporate roles)
  •  I didn't start one because of ill health, or the need for flexibility.

I started my businesses through the sheer will of wanting to be successful on my own two feet.

I wanted to feel that feeling of independence, 'bullet proofness' and the empowerment of creating money/freedom/time from 'nothing'.

To me this is all a wonderful game and I'm fortunate enough to be on the winning team but once upon a time, I was on the losing team and that game turned into one that I didn't want to be a part of. In fact, on more than one occasion.

Those of you who have known me a long time will know that I have had many businesses and a lot of them I walked away from.

Why...

Because I got ridiculously frustrated running on the spot!

Business was HARD! Hard like trying to fill a well with a bucket with no bottom.

I'm not scared of hardwork, but failing has taught me is to stop listening to 'you'll get there one day just keep going'. The reality is, if you're continually running on the stop you'll NEVER get there. What will happen is that you'll run out of energy with nothing to show for it.

You've got to keep moving...

In real terms I'm talking about changing the angle.

A successful business is really quite simple. Sell people what they want! That's it! But we get so bogged down in the rest of the crap that we forget that that's what business is about.

We get caught up in forcing it to work, like trying to fit an elephant into a carrier bag.

If people don't want what you have, you don't have a business. You have a ball and chain. You have to change the product or how you 'position' the product. The angle has to change.

Setting up shop and putting your sign up isn't the end of the hard work. It's about tweaking your angle until you find the irresistible sweet spot. Sorry that phrase makes me cringe too, but it's true!

Stop trying to convince people...

Start becoming irresistible, then and only then will business start to feel like a fun game that you actually want to play!

This is why I do what I do. Helping business owners find a way forward by turning their businesses into desirable 'must haves'. Because I don't believe business has to be that HARD. Hard work yes, but not hard.

Keep moving forward because the world hasn't seen anything yet!

Plus...Brand New...

***I've recently opened the doors to my brand new programme 'Monetise Your Message' to help coaches and service based entrepreneurs find the right angle to make your business a desirable 'must have'. impostor syndrome

Becoming an Expert whilst Battling Impostor Syndrome

By Jennifer Hall | Business Mindset , Positioning

This is important for me to share because it is something I have battled with all my life, and I know many other experts have as well...

My Journey...

I find that when we first learn a little, we actually have more confidence and passion to share it.

Until we realise that actually the topic runs a lot deeper than we originally realised. We go through a space of losing confidence because we don't know it all.

So we continue to learn and dive deeper in a quest to become a TRUE expert. Still we still don't feel like we know EVERYTHING. As we dive deeper we realise that the topic also runs as wide as it does deep. We realise actually there is no one size fits all approach. Everyone and everything is individual.

This can leave us feeling like we don't know enough to call ourselves an expert. It creates these feelings of self-doubt and 'impostor syndrome'. This leads to undercharging and undervaluing what we do. In some extreme cases, it stops us putting ourselves out there altogether.

All the while not recognising that we will NEVER know it all. But in our quest to know more, 'we have indeed become a true expert'.

Therefore...

  • Embrace the power in admitting we are not all knowing. It's been proven that by being honest about this with your following actually builds more trust. As, when you are certain about something, they feel in total confidence in the truth of what you have to say.
  • Embrace the unknown, the new, and the endless possibilities. Know your boundaries. Be ready to be proven wrong. But KNOW that you KNOW more than enough to change peoples lives.
  • Specialise in your expertise for a certain type of person and you will boost your own confidence. This is in the knowledge that you have a better chance of feeling certain and secure from your own experience, as well as from those certain (types) individuals that have been helped by your talents.

The truth is only the truth from a certain perspective. It's those that resonate with that truth that will be impacted the most from your talents and expertise.

Plus - brand New...

I've recently opened the doors to my brand new programme 'Monetise Your Message' to help coaches and service based entrepreneurs turn their business into an irresistible desirable offering, instead of rejected and overlooked. How To Find Your Treasure Within And Celebrate Your Greatness

By Jennifer Hall | Business Mindset , Positioning

Never give up...

After my sister had experienced a life changing event, she found herself sleeping on my sofa. At the time she was feeling pretty low. She had low self-esteem and low self-confidence. This was largely to do with her previous relationship, and felt like she was starting life all over again .

But still, she was determined to stand on her own two feet again. Every day she’d wake up and hit the laptop to search for jobs. In the beginning, she was scouring for coffee shop roles, cleaning, and retail assistant roles . Now don’t get me wrong, there is absolutely nothing wrong with anyone who works in either role, but you see, the reason she was searching for those roles was because she felt like that was all she was capable of doing. She wasn’t willing to look at anything over minimum wage because she didn’t think that anyone would be willing to pay her any more than that .

Don't Give Up on Your Greatness...

Each day she’d find a job description, open up her CV, and as any great CV should be, she started to tailor it to each job that she applied for. This meant she had to rewrite quite a bit of it (all true stuff). She had to come up with examples for each of the things the job description was asking for.

CV number one was complete, and she felt accomplished, and off she sent it . CV two complete, and she started to build momentum. No responses back thus far, but she was taking action, and she was starting to feel those feelings of hope that life was about to get better .

Your Treasure Exists Within...

What she and I started to notice though, was that after each application, she started to gain more and more self-belief and self-worth. This was because she was continually being asked to demonstrate how amazing she was, and she had to come up with the goods. She was forced to look at all the treasure that she’d been denying existed.

After application ten, she started to realise that she could do so much more than she first anticipated, and actually turned down a job offer at a coffee shop , as well as another role. This was with the utter belief that she had more to give, which was worth way more than any of those jobs were offering.

She started to apply for higher paying roles which demanded more skill. After over 30 job applications, a few interviews. After digging up her treasure on a daily basis, and blowing her own trumpet , she landed a job at a reputable organisation on more money than she ever thought possible. She would be doing things that she’d always thought she couldn’t do, or was too scared to attempt .

All because she celebrated her greatness!

Celebrate Your Greatness...

Make time to celebrate your wins and blow your own trumpet.

Action:

  • Pick someone you admire that you aspire to be 'like'.
  • Now write out their 'job' description including responsibilities and person specification.
  • Now apply for it by creating your CV to demonstrate why you're the best person for the job!
You'll soon see that you have way more GOLD than you give yourself credit for!

Scared It Wont Work? You’ve Forgotten Something Very Important.

By Jennifer Hall | Business Mindset

Are You Feeling Scared?

One of the biggest reasons people fail to take opportunities and risks and fail to invest in themselves and their future is that...'I'm scared it won't work'.

This truly upsets me, because they've forgotten something very important...

Have You Forgotten As Well?

You've forgotten that...

  • You have everything you need right now to start the journey to success. That every successful person started exactly where you are right now. Each faced their own set of challenges. In the words of Gary V 'everyone thinks their sh#t is the sh#t'. No matter how privileged or underprivileged you think you are, we all face challenges and difficulties in equal measures. It's about accepting the hand you've been dealt and doing the BEST you can with it.
  • Success is a choice. You choose to keep going, to get help, to work hard. It's your choice to make sacrifices, to take AND create the opportunities that will get you to where you want to be and to throw the towel in when it gets tough.
  • Fundamentally you are entitled to success just as much as the next person. My most successful clients were told they would struggle and couldn't do it. They were failing miserably at the time we started working together. Success does not breed success, failure breeds success. That is, if you choose to see it that way. You have just as much right to embrace success as the next person.
  • You were on a mission to help other people and that in fact your fear is impacting those that need you most. You've got all caught up in the fear of looking stupid and a failure to those around you. And the sad fact is those people whose thoughts you care about so much, do not matter. Those that need your help matter. Whether you're helping people to finally lose weight that has been crippling them in health and mindset. Helping people to get clear on their journey and become the captain of their own ship. Helping people to create wealth, or reach a better place in their lives... you're here to change lives!

Don't Let The Fear Take Over...

  • Whatever it is that you started out wanting to achieve, being fearful is not only holding you back from fulfilling your greatness, but it's leaving a void for all those that need you the most.
  • People who are scared it won't work sidestep through life. Taking opportunities, but not the ones that take them forward, Instead they take the ones that take them to something different, something easier. Less scary, less risky.
  • If you let the fear take over, this will be you for the rest of your life. Remember your mission. Remember your 'why' and start taking steps forward.
  • Believe in yourself, because you have more power, more control and more resources around you than you truly know.

'If you think you're too small to make a difference, try sleeping in a tent with a mosquito' - Dalai Lama

High-Ticket Selling – There are Two Types of People, which one are you?

By Jennifer Hall | Business Mindset , Client Attraction , Pricing , Uncategorized

There are some people that get excited by charging high ticket and there are some that get scared...

Which one are you?

***And if you get excited, is it for the right reasons?

i.e. high cash injections into your business, finally being able to focus on your clients high-transformation, attracting high-paying committed clients, being able to finally spend time growing your tribe without the worry of when you'll next get paid to cover your costs.

***Or are you one of those 'out of integrity' type of people who try and get away with overcharging?

Because that is the exact reason people get so worried and scared about charging high-ticket prices.

Worried?

I'm going to call out the two HUGE things that worried me when I first started out, and all the things that my clients have said to me the past...

'What if people don't find what i'm offering valuable enough or worth that amount and ask for their money back?'

'And even if they pay, why would someone pay someone like me that amount?'

Truthbomb!

Let me give it to you straight...

  • People who pay more get better results. The higher price doesn't just benefit you. It benefits your clients on a MUCH larger scale. They are more committed, more determined, more ambitious and more action taking.
  • If you're able to sell at a high-level, yes they have expectations, but these high-paying clients aren't stupid. They will have complete trust and faith in you. So unless you're genuinely trying to shaft someone and you're lying to them, they wouldn't be paying you those large sums unless they had complete confidence in you.
  • And on the 'why me?' note, why not you? What makes you less worthy than the next person. You wouldn't be on this journey unless you knew deep down you had something incredible to offer people.
  • High-end clients aren't 'better' than you. They just have a problem that they need solving, and here's the real Truthbomb...They WANT to pay what's necessary for it. If the problem is that bad, or the ambition, that strong, they don't want to half arse it. They want it sorted. They don't want to be chucking money down the drain.

The Answer...

In my brand new 121/mastermind hybrid programme not only do I show you how to gain the trust and confidence of your ideal clients to sell high-ticket with ease, but I also help you to build the trust and confidence in yourself as a high-transformation coach/consultant/expert.

I won't have you looking at yourself in that worthless way. You are incredibly valuable, you're just ignoring what's there and letting the mind gremlins take a hold.

Stand up, take your place, own your worth, and start changing lives... you know, like you set out to do!

Giving Out Free Advice? Then Know Your Boundaries

By Jennifer Hall | Business Mindset , Pricing , Productivity

'Are You Taking The P*ss!' - They Will If You Let Them...It's all About Boundaries...

A fair few of my clients have become friends and a few of my friends have become clients AND many people in my network who were neither, but, could use my services have also become incredible friends.

And this is where it can get dangerous for your business if you don't have boundaries. Because if you're not careful you'll become a friend with business benefits.

How many of us have had our brains picked over coffee?

We've all experienced this and it doesn't feel great and we can sometimes feel like that person has taken advantage.

But here's the #truthbomb...

...It's got nothing to do with them...but It has everything to do with you!

you don't set boundaries with yourself and you don't arm yourself with ways to respond to requests for free help then you will almost certainly have your services stolen from you.

...It's your responsibility to prepare yourself for these requests and situations.

Now the other side of the coin is - you may WANT to give away some stuff for free because you adore them...

BUT I want you to ask yourself this...

...is that fair to your paying clients? And is that person going to truly value what you are offering them?

I say feel free to give pointers but know where the line is and be prepared to 'handle' the situation.

Here are a couple of ways you could handle the situation...

  • Random prospect brain picking request - 'I'd be happy to chat through whether I'm the best person to help you with this, and I charge X to help my clients achieve 'X result' let me know if you'd like to chat and I'll send you a call link.
  • Someone you know on friendly terms asking for your help - 'I'm really excited that you're looking to move in that direction, I think that it's a great idea! I'd love to brainstorm some ideas with you, moving forward in terms of implementation I'd be happy to chat through formally working together if that's something you'd like to explore.'
  • OR if it's a more direct ask - 'Totally happy to chat through some ideas with you (if indeed you are -if not omit this part) but in terms of helping you implement for free, it just wouldn't be fair to my paying clients.'

So the lesson is...

Know your boundaries, stick to them and enforce. If they're professionals themselves they'll respect them and you. AND - you'll be helping them own and respect their own boundaries and value in the process. Because the truth is... if they truly value it, they'll pay for it.
There's a big difference between offering friendly support and actually taking someone through a process.
