Why Just Deciding to Charge High-End Prices Doesn’t Work

The positioning faux pas...

So you've decided to charge high-end prices, this why that might not work out for...

You may have seen a video doing the rounds over the last few years to explain positioning, where someone takes a pen & places it in a pot with 15 others exactly like it with 99p attached to it (positioning a low-end offering) then taking that same pen & placing it into a smart looking box & placing it into a glass display case (positioning a high-end offering).

Whilst I specialize in helping business owners to position themselves as the BEST option in the market & that, in turn, enables them to charge more for their services, that doesn’t just come from a decision to raise their prices.

The problem with the pen example is that we are taking the SAME pen & charging more for it. And for most of us who work with integrity, this just doesn’t feel good!

BUT what we’re failing to realise is, is that we’re viewing ourselves as a crappy pen when we’re not! We ARE a high-end offering but we’re choosing to place ourselves in the 99p pot. In order to successfully charge higher prices, we have to OWN our value & that comes from SEEING our own value.

But How?

A great way to shift your mindset on this is to look at the evidence of what you bring to the table. But our value can’t help EVERYONE which means that it is not actually valued at all by the wrong people. Which is why focusing your attention on the right people who would take the most value from your offering is the ONLY way you’ll be able to truly see the value of what you have to offer.

Pet services to someone without a pet is useless! But a Dog Behaviourist who specialises in destructive habits to a dog owner who has a dog who is chewing up the furniture would be truly valuable and results in you not only being able to see and own your value but enables you to communicate it in a way that enables the right person to see how you can help them and feel happy to pay your chosen price point.

How can you offer the best service when you’re marketing 80% of the time?

MARKETING FACT 1...

Firstly, if you’re not making marketing/sales your first port of call then you’ll never make ‘good’ money NOR will you give the best to your clients. 

MARKETING FACT 2...

Secondly, If you spend all your time focusing on the product/coaching package, you’re blinkered for the following reasons:

  1. Getting clarity on your niche and Ideal Client is all part of your marketing strategy and if you don’t know who the person is that you are selling to, and/or you don’t spend time speaking to those people, you could be creating a product/package that nobody wants or cares about.
  2. You won’t have an audience to sell to or worse, an irrelevant audience, and therefore that product is obsolete.
  3. No one knows who you are, so there is no trust.
  4. Chances are, by not marketing you have not been offering any or enough value to build know, like, trust.
     

MARKETING FACT 3...

When you make studying your IC and marketing/sales a priority, you are then able to do the following:

  • You’re able to QUICKLY create packages that your IC actually wants.
  • When you sell the package first before you’ve created it, you save yourself a lot of time and worry creating things that people don’t want.
  • If you’ve sold something first and then you have to create it… surprise surprise, your productivity to create it, shoots through the roof!
  • You’re able to serve and add value whilst building a relevant audience to sell to.
  • Prospects will have the ‘know, like, trust’ factor and will have bought into ‘you’, so they KNOW the value, and they KNOW your expertise.
  • By offering value relevant to your IC regularly as part of your marketing strategy, you are growing and learning all the time for the sake of your clients.

SUMMARY...

So you can see that to offer the best service to your clients, you MUST make the study of your IC and marketing to them your TOP priority, otherwise you’re selling them crap they don’t want! And that’s bad news for your business AND your clients!

The Simple Mindset Shift You need to Make to Run a Successful Business

Today I'm talking to you about the simple mindset shift that you need to make to ensure that your business is successful! 

I'm going to give an example that explains this in startup terms because it's the easiest way for me to explain this concept, but this can be applied at any stage of a business not just in a start-up.

In fact, it's really key that you keep this in mind whenever you write content in your marketing, speak to your audience or whenever you are creating a product.

A problem arises when people create businesses or create products on the basis that they just enjoy doing it. For example let's use craft businesses, which seem to be very popular at the moment. A lot of craft businesses in the last year have popped out the ground like daisies because people want to turn their passion into a profitable business, but where it fails is when you are doing it for you, instead of the client.

When I talk about the fact that you can work in alignment with your purpose and you can absolutely make money from it, I truly believe that, but what I do not mean, is that you can turn any hobby or process that you want to teach into a success.

It definitely won’t be successful unless it solves a problem!

This is the key mind shift change we need to make, i.e. looking at what we do from your client's perspective instead of our own insular view.

This is why it’s so important to start with a mission that's bigger than us and to delve into why we started the business in the first place. You have to make it bigger than just you and your family and what's going on in your world otherwise it’s a very selfish point view that no one else is really interested in.

When we ask the question - ‘what is the transformation that I want to see happen in in the wider world?’  we ensure that we can help them solve the problems that 'they' have in order to help them achieve the goals that 'they' have.

So whenever you go to create a product or write a piece of content marketing you really need to be looking at it through the eyes of your ideal client instead of from your perspective. 

So instead of saying ‘this is my process and this is what I want to teach or take somebody through’, ask yourself:

  • What is the problem that this person has?
  • What is the goal that this person has?
  • How can I use my skills and my processes to help them achieve that goal and overcome a problem that is stopping them achieve it?

As soon as you make that shift you will find that your business will be sellable. You will be able to monetize it and to make traction because you’re  actually in demand instead of running a fun enterprise. It will still be purposeful, you can still work within your zone of genius, but use your superpowers to help rather than to pass the time!
